This project will address an advanced method of water purification that combines Nanoflotation and Ultrafiltration. A technology known as a Replaceable Skin Layer Membrane has been developed by David Bromley Engineering Ltd. In this, a powder is rapidly adsorbed onto a steel support membrane. The powder will enable purified water to pass through the support while capturing metal ions. The key innovation is the ability of the powder to be rapidly (seconds) removed and replaced when fouled. This project will develop a structure activity relationship for solid "skin" materials based on a lead compound already in place. The technology has applications in any waste water, industrial or municipal, but first tests will be carried out with tailings water from oilsands development. The first key metric is purified water but knowledge gained from this project could be used to develop metal selective skin layers, for example to not just remove but recover more valued metals. The research spans basic chemistry and surface science to engineering testing on a small scale prototype with real industrial water. The training experience is multidisciplinary and the value to the company and the natural resource industry in Canada and globally is broad.
