Carbon capture refers to the removal of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from gas streams resulting from energy generation and is a key tool to mitigate climate change. Carbon capture is a complex problem as there are different types of gas streams from different sources each with different optimal capture scenarios. Present capture methods do not offer viable options for capture as they expend large amounts of energy and are too costly to be widely distributed. New technologies are needed and these innovative routes span a wide range of approaches. For a technology that will need to deal with enormous volumes of gas, it is critical for research to merge materials discovery with process and system level engineering. Moreover, the value of a carbon capture technology is intimately tied to the acceptance of that technology. Environmental benefits versus economic stresses will determine public acceptance and guide policy decisions. The CREATE Training Program in Carbon Capture brings together researchers from science, engineering, political science and business from across Canada studying different aspects of carbon capture. The Program also connects to key international partners to craft a unique training environment spanning borders, disciplines and societal sectors to generate personnel of high value in a field of global strategic importance.
