英文摘要
The millimeter-wave (mm-wave) technology has the potential to revolutionize wireless communications, radar and imaging systems. Wireless data traffic is projected to increase 10,000 times within the next 20 years. Radar and imaging systems with high accuracy are mandatory for industry, self-driving cars, medicine, security, and so on. Therefore, the solution is to move up in frequency, into an unused non-traditional spectrum, the mm-waves, where enormous bandwidths are available.
Advanced noise measurements are required for such systems in order to design efficient transceivers having increased sensitivity, high dynamic range, and the optimum signal to noise ratio (function of the required bandwidth and modulation techniques).
The proposed project is a novel implementation of mm-wave noise measurements using integrated circuit technologies. The project will take advantage of our research team's strong expertise in both mm-wave circuit and system design and collaboration with a long-date, experienced, industrial partner, Focus Microwaves, a well-established Canadian company in the microwave/mm-wave domain, a world leader in load-pull, harmonic load-pull, and noise measurement solutions.
Research efforts will be oriented towards the design of new broadband mm-wave noise measurement system architectures, prototype fabrication using integrated planar technologies (employing innovative mm-wave components, such as multi-port interferometers), and specific performance measurements of test benches.
The new knowledge that will emerge from this project and the training of highly qualified personnel associated to the different stages of this work will certainly contribute to enhance Canada's global competitiveness in this high-technology sector.
