This project unravel the geological history of the Fenelon Gold deposit. The Fenelon deposit located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, one of the most proliferous Archean lode gold provinces in the world. The wealth of the Abitibi comes primarily from its southern region, where increased rock exposure and infrastructure create an optimal environment for exploration. However, with many of the largest and most accessible deposits of the Abitibi having already been discovered, exploration companies are now looking northward to find the next big deposit. The Fenelon Project was a finalist for the 2019 Discovery of the Year Award given by the Quebec Mineral Exploration Association and is one of the pioneer projects in the north. Despite its remote location, thick overburden, and a lack of academic research in the area, Fenelon has shown significant potential for mineral wealth through its ongoing exploration program. This proposal will be the first research to investigate the geological history of this property through age-dating, and whole rock geochemistry which will help to guide exploration drilling and put the Fenelon property into a context with the other gold deposits in the Abitibi. This will result in a greater understanding of this ancient part of the Earth's crust. Additionally, microanalysis of discrete mineral phases will help enable the determination of source of the gold and the fluids and processes that led to gold precipitation. These results will enhance our understanding of the northern Abitibi, while also benefiting Fenelon's exploration program. Fenelon's success, will create a strong precedent that will encourage future exploration and research in the northern Abitibi, generating continued growth for the Canadian economy for decades to come.
