Weld effective length equations have been developed for many connections to steel rectangular hollow sections to allow for more efficient design of weldments. Such equations have also been developed for a small number of connections to/between circular hollow sections (CHS). Over the long-term, research is needed to expand these rules. The current proposal is for research to determine: (a) the effect of single-sided welding; (b) the effect of eccentric loading; and (c) weld effective lengths for branch plates in plate-to-plate and plate-to-CHS T-, Y- and X-connections. It is anticipated that this work will result in new design rules for implementation into forthcoming revisions of design codes that will reduce material, labor, and detailing requirements for steel connections.
