Environmental Instruments Canada Inc. provides radiation safety solutions for the uranium mining industry, residential radiation control, and public radiation safety. Environmental Instruments Canada Inc. has done preliminary work on direct manufacturing of housings for hand held instruments using Additive Manufacturing / 3D printing technology. Initial results are very encouraging because of the ability to print the base part and the over-mold in a single print, and also because of the total design freedom enabled by Additive Manufacturing. Although they are functionally very promising, initial prototypes are not as durable as desired, both from manufacturing assembly toughness as well as from a drop test point of view. The project with Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Research in Additive Manufacturing and Prototyping (RAMP) facility will examine digital blending of Additive Manufacturing materials to produce a tougher and durable base material that can still be over-molded with a rubber-like material, all in a single 3D print.
