The ultimate goal of this project is to develop smart radio environments (SREs) by controlling the 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) wireless mediums. To solve the complexity, cost, power, and interference issues in conventional wireless networks, we will develop passive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) with sensing and adaptation abilities.
The project will pursue new directions in engineering the wireless propagation channel using low-cost passive RISs to solve potential 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) challenges. The team will leverage previous research to address knowledge gaps in implementing state-of-the-art RIS with features such as reconfigurability, low loss, wide bandwidth, and multi-beam reflection, topologies in which system functions such as sensing and controlling become an integral part of the RIS, and machine learning (ML) algorithms to control the RIS.
Upon completion, the project outcomes will benefit Alberta and Canada in cybersecurity by building domestic 5G products with secured data flow, diversify Alberta's economy with emerging 5G and IoT technologies, benefit various Canadian industries in wireless, satellite, and transportation fields with mass-market products, reduce environmental impacts, enhance government services, and create desirable new jobs.
