DementiAbility has been teaching and distributing evidence-based knowledge about how to effectively support those living with dementia and provide day-to-day caregiver resources for 8-years. They develop and sell resources and products, including games, books, and audio offerings to help people with dementia achieve success. Currently, they offer these products as paper-based products. This method has limitations in delivering support to their clients with speed, efficiency, easy access and scalability. They would like to develop software that contains their products for accessible and quick access with tablets. DementiAbility does not have the software development expertise to plan the technical foundation, prototype designs, and create the software. The Mohawk College mHealth and eHealth Digital Innovation Centre (MEDIC) has extensive digital health experiences with building solutions for health business challenges. DementiAbility and MEDIC will collaborate to develop software specifically designed and built to contain digital products that support people living with dementia, caregivers, and family to reduce dementia impacts, increase confidence and quality of life. MEDIC and DementiAbility will investigate the optimal software architecture, functionality, design, and user experience; and to develop a platform that will contain the support products.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) notes that dementia is a set of symptoms that can affect language, mood and behaviour, and it may appear as a decline in cognitive abilities. PHAC noted 402,000 people 65-years and older are living with dementia, which is a significant portion of the population that need evidence-based resources that expose their abilities and who will benefit from shifting the focus from loss to enhancements in their lives. DementiAbility is forecasting a 40% increase in sales and an increase in their international sales as a result of this software.
