With a growing number of actors accessing space, and satellites gaining potentially offensive capabilities, rapid identification of threats is crucial for protecting national interests related to space. This project will advance the field by quantifying the correlation between operational status of a satellite and temperature of its key elements such as solar panels and radiators, and inform an optimal strategy for precision measurement of spatially-unresolved thermal signatures through a space-based infrared telescope. Analysis of data from public archives of international missions will be used for proof of concept and to inform the design of an Australian low-cost space telescope with world-leading capabilities for space domain awareness.
