An optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) is indispensable for research in optics and photonics. Typical OSAs are based on diffraction gratings, yielding a resolution of about 1 GHz. This resolution level is insufficient for two measurements that are key to our research: 1) distorted spectra of extremely high bit rate communications and 2) radio frequency transmissions on an optical carrier. We must observe, diagnose, and manipulate the optical spectra with higher accuracy and finer granularity than standard OSAs provide. To meet these measurement challenges in our research program, we request funding for a high-resolution optical spectrum analyzer (HR-OSA).
