The new millennium brought increased knowledge sharing among people and distributed intelligence in smart devices. Smart devices use untethered, wireless links to access networks whose optical transport moves vast volumes of data to the cloud. Cloud processing brings enormous intelligence to smart devices, provided high performance wireless and optical links are available. The Canada Research Chair in Communications Systems Enabling the Cloud will perform research to maximize capacity in optical systems in data centers and long haul links, and to optimize the wireless/optical interface for fiber to the home. We will take advances in materials and devices and create innovative systems catalyzed by these new capabilities, building bridges from ¿glass to packets¿.
