The goal of this research program is to establish a novel platform for the development of reliable and high performance network of wirelessly connected soft and stretchable sensorsystems on body. Such sensor-systems can be the next generation of smart connected noninvasive as well as implantable sensors with applications in internet of things (IoT), HMI and health care.
We will focus on addressing some of the major drawbacks of the current state of art on-skin wearable technology such as reliable long-time and continuous sensing from challenging skin interfaces such as hairy skin. A dry and soft sensor that can firmly adhere between hairs without adhesive and gels and therefore, avoid motion artifacts will be developed for multichannel recording of brain electrical activities (electroencephalography, EEG). Such sensors will be hidden between hairs, hence offer visual imperceptibility, privacy and mental comfort to users for sensing during daily activities. We will also investigate the solutions to address a grand challenge of strain-induced-performance-degradation in 2D materials based electronics field. We will apply this solution to develop an ultrathin and stretchable amplifier circuit made of emerging 2D materials for integration with the proposed EEG sensor. This will enable immediate onsite amplification of EEG signals, resulting in improving signal to noise ratio.
Several highly qualified personnel (HQP) will be trained on this cutting edge research and will obtain advanced knowledge and skills in the fields of nanoelectronics and bioelectronics.
