Executive Summary Our department has currently many equipment's to properly analyze and characterize polymeric and solid-state chemistry. However, we lack the ability to properly characterize the properties of novel material such as their degradation profiles, thermal stability, mass loss, change in crystal shape, crystallographic space group, volume, pyrolysis, combustion processes, or activation energies. Instrument Requested A Thermogravimetric Analyzer with Fourier Transform Infrared Capability (TGA-FTIR). Description of Instrument This equipment is utilized to combine thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with the identification power of an FTIR spectrometer. TGA measures the change in sample weight as a function of temperature or time in a controlled atmosphere, which is usually accompanied by an evolution of gases caused by sample decomposition or volatilization. The weight loss corresponds to the evolved gas components associated with volatilization or degradation of the material. Coupling the TGA to an FTIR spectrometer, enables the evolved gases to be chemically identified and help to elucidate information on materials heat stability, degradation temperatures, residual solvent levels, absorbed moisture content, amount non-combustible content, and to the nature of the decomposition process. Equipment Request and Reason for Proposed Configuration: The equipment request is to build a dual TGA-IR equipment. Depending on the user, both equipment can be used independently for material characterization, or utilized in tandem to characterize material thermal stability and identification of the volatile by FTIR. Research Activity This equipment will be shared amongst 3 primary users listed here as applicant and co-applicants at Ryerson University (RU) in the department of Chemistry & Biology and the department of Chemical Engineering. It will also be available to other researchers at RU.
