Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology coexists within one of world's largest nickel deposits and in a region recognized for its mining activities that include the extraction of copper, cobalt, gold and diamonds. As such, the Sudbury region has produced multiple integrated mineral processing facilities making it a region with the highest concentration of mining and mining associated activity in north-eastern North America. This regional synergy has not only guided Cambrian College's academic delivery but also is an anchoring focus for the College's Applied research activities. The city of Sudbury and mining processing have become synonymous as an area of expertise and know-how for all aspects of the mining industry. As Northern Ontario's largest community college with more than 4,400 students and over 70 programs, highlighted by Cambrian's Schools of Skills Training (31 programs), of Engineering Technology (5 programs), and of Environmental Studies (3 programs), Cambrian College has a direct impact on the mineral processing landscape. Since Cambrian College's Applied Research inception in 2008, nearly 60% of applied research projects have had a focus on the mining industry. With mineral processing's pervasion into applied research and its regional significance, Cambrian College's application to NSERC-CCI- Innovation Enhancement grant is focused on a "Mine Environmental Stewardship Initiative" in order to further enhance applied research activities with private sector businesses of Northern Ontario."Mine Environmental Stewardship Initiative" will help address projects dealing with prevention andremediation in view of the mining industry impact on multiple environmental subjects as well as occupationalhealth.
