In collaboration with Atlantis Research Labs Inc., the goals of this CRD project are to better understand theflow physics associated with a novel intake concept, leverage the knowledge to design and optimize thesystem, and perform innovative ground- and flight-based tests for validation. The work is motivated by thedevelopment of the Atlantis Intake System (AIS) for high-speed propulsion applications. Applications includesupersonic aircraft, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), missiles, and targets. State-of-the-art simulation modelingwill be used in combination with optimization and design. A high Mach number impulse apparatus will beused in conjunction with advanced non-intrusive diagnostics to obtain experimental validation data. Flighttesting will involve novel use of aircraft. Results will be exploited to improve the AIS design and betterunderstand entrainment from a heated supersonic jet flow. The work will also provide detailed analysis on anew type of propulsion cycle. In addition to the development of the AIS and better understanding of the flowphysics, major contributions from the project also include the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP) andincreasing the exposure of high-tech research in the aerospace field in western Canada.
