Ontology Based Data Access on Big Data Platforms

Ontology Based Data Access (OBDA) has emerged as one of the leading applications of ontologies and knowledge representation (KR): OBDA enhances data with implicit domain knowledge to provide users with additional and/or more understandable answers. However, with the advent of big data platforms such as Hadoop, Apache Spark, and/orMicrosoft Azure, current implementation techniques are inadequate as they typically target relational systems and SQL as the main information storage and retrieval mechanism (at best).The proposed research will focus on big data platforms as the target architectures for OBDA systems and applications, this way allowing to apply KR techniques to managing large amounts of data while maintaining a high-level semantic access to such data with the help of domain ontologies.
