An ever-growing demand in the aerospace industry, coupled with the need for lighter and more fuel-efficient aircraft, has resulted in a need for an automated design tool for landing gear assemblies. Aircraft landing gear has many moving parts that create immense design challenges. The objective of the proposed research is to develop a novel methodology that can automate the design process of landing gears, by utilizing the equivalent static loading and by further developing packaging optimization methods. The ultimate goal will be to develop a design tool that can automatically generate the optimal landing gear for different input parameters.The benefits to the engineering discipline are immense. Although the research will be focused on landing gear, the design techniques can be potentially used in a wide range of applications. Through joint research between Queen's University and industry experts at Safran, novel and practical methodologies will be developed.
