The goal of this partnership is to transmit and render graphics and video on mobile devices considering limited bandwidth, memory, computational resources and battery power while maintaining high perceptual quality. The outcome will be increasing the performance of video, virtual and augmented reality applications on mobile devices, with applications in gaming, training, and interactive virtual environments. Unlike desktops and high-end laptops, handheld mobile devices including cell phones have lower resources and restricted power supply. Thus, it may not be easy to deploy computationally intensive algorithms that use up a significant amount of power on these devices. Considering this, we will develop new perceptually optimized video and graphics interpolation/simplification algorithms. Device specific mobile hardware architectures will be taken into account to optimize performance. The project is a critical step towards introducing the next generation of mobile video, games and augmented reality applications to Canadians. The outcomes will allow Canadians to have a higher quality of experience with games and video on mobile devices.
