Many Canadian workers, e.g. Hydro-Quebec linemen, Canadian Armed Forces soldiers and Canada Post letter carriers, may experience cold stress in poor weather conditions (frigid temperatures, killer winds) in winter or in northern regions. The effectiveness of today's thermal insulating materials is being measured in laboratory settings under standards that do not represent the actual conditions of use, thus yielding results that differ vastly from reality. Preliminary results show that wind, temperature, and relative humidity - three criteria not factored in by these standards - might play a key role in the loss of thermal insulation due to compression of the insulating structure, among other things. In fact, increasing the wind speed from 0 to 16 km/h results in textile assemblies losing about 85% of their thermal insulation effectiveness. The purpose of this project is to develop textile assemblies with high insulating properties performing well in the cold and windy conditions of Canadian winters and northern regions. These textiles assemblies made of 100% natural milkweed fibers and advanced materials such as aerogels and shape-memory material, will need to meet specific requirements, e.g. maintaining their structural integrity if exposed to strong winds, also not currently factored in when measuring the thermal insulating performance of textiles. This project is viewed in the context of a local economy that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and diversified. Moreover, by offering highly insulating textiles, the industry partners will open new markets for the Canadian textile industry and set themselves apart from the competition on a global scale. At the Canadian university level, benefits will include not only new knowledge gained in the field of heat transfer in natural fibers, but also researchers becoming involved in updating international standards.
