This project proposes partnership between the Western University and BFC Technologies Inc. for development of a breakthrough technology which targets the construction of "bio-solar façade panels" (BSF) to cultivate microalgae and/or bacteria inside plane thin and aesthetic photobioreactors (PBR) integrated into building façade. The project aims at improving the environmental quality of the new generation of buildings by increasing their energetic performance, CO2 capture and transformation, oxygen production, wastewater treatment, production of value-added products with food and cosmetic applications and circular economy. It offers a great opportunity of an economical alternative solution for algal-culture development which is now hindered due to high production costs and energy consumption.Bio-solar façade technology also helps to offset the costs of clean energy transition in the building sector by providing a revenue stream through the algal biomass that is produced by the PBRs. The outcomes of the proposed project are of exceptional importance to Canada and may also be important internationally to meet GHG reduction targets by using bio-solar façade panels integrated in buildings.
