A breakthrough process for the extraction of nickel from sulfide ores is under development that, unlike current technologies, promises virtually no sulfur emission. The process has been proven in an extensive previous laboratory-scale study. The project under this proposed NSERC I2I Phase 1 will address several questions still remaining about the novel process including the options for improving quality and using its products. At the conclusion, the project will provide the essential information for a techno-economic assessment of the technology and a go/no-go decision for enhancement and scale-up studies.
