Prof. Mank studies the genetic basis and evolutionary causes of sexual dimorphism, arguably the most pervasive form of intra-specific diversity in the animal kingdom. Males and females in many animals differ for a broad array of traits, including morphology, physiology and behaviour. Her cutting-edge research programme combines population genomic and transcriptomic approaches with functional genetics to reveal the genetic causes and evolutionary consequences of sexual dimorphism. Additionally, sex differences in disease incidence and therapeutic response have recently emerged as major biomedical concerns, and she works with biomedics to understand the genetic basis of sexual dimorphism in clinically relevant contexts.
