We use mathematics and computers to study the motion of atoms in molecules and during reactions. Our results are used to understand experimental measurements and guide new experiments. It is necessary to use quantum methods; this is difficult because quantum mechanics is nonlocal. Using established methods, it is possible to deal with molecules having four atoms. We develop new tools that make it possible to tackle larger systems. We study methane, of interest in astrophysics and atmospheric science. Understanding methane may help to cope with global warming. Methods to calculate rates will enable one to model combustion and atmospheric chemistry.
