The proposed research will develop, test and apply new methods in geochronology - the science of measuring absolute geological time ¿ to better understand geological processes that form economically important deposits of copper, zinc and other metals in Earth's crust. The unique approach used will measure the rare elements rhenium and osmium in ore minerals directly; these function as a geological clock by radioactive decay. The results will provide critical new age information for ore formation that will test competing ideas for the origin of ores, and will lead to important advancements in knowledge regarding geological processes that form ores.
