My research will focus on: (1) developing a new type of laser based on nonlinear optics and extremely small-diameter optical fibers (nanofibers), and a specialized narrowband optical filter allowing an improved tuning range; 2) developing a combined fiber sensor system allowing simultaneous monitoring of strain, temperature, and acoustic waves, for structural health monitoring. Applications of our results in safety and security monitoring of power lines, nuclear power generators, highway bridges, dams and pipelines are extremely relevant to Canada, as natural resources represent major economic activities. This research will provide a competitive edge to Canadian industry through technology transfer and HQP training.
