The proposed research program will focus on key climate warming-related land cover changes in high latitude boreal forests that have the potential to result in state changes in these ecosystems, thereby altering structure, function and ecosystem services. Three areas of proposed research are: 1) Permafrost thaw-induced changes in forest composition, structure and function; 2) Wildfire as a driver of land cover change; and 3) The role of shrubs in treeline dynamics. Using both observational and experimental approaches, novel advances will be made in our understanding of high latitude ecosystem change with a view to improved predictive capacity for Canada's boreal.
