Regularity of cell size is a classic signature of healthy epithelia while the loss of size regularity is a diagnostic of pleomorphic cancers. How are numerous individual cells within a tissue regulated to have the same size? In preliminary work, I identified evidence that regularity of cell size is the product of cell-size dependent signaling ¿ a signaling that selectively promotes growth of small cells while inhibiting growth in large cells. The aim of the current proposal is to identify the molecular components of the cell size sensor ¿ the mechanism of cell size dependent signaling events.
