Photovoltaic (PV) cells stand poised to usher in a new era of renewable and environmentally friendly energy, but the production of conventional silicon cells remains a highly energy intensive process. Organic and hybrid organic-inorganic solar cells promise to dramatically reduce both the embodied energy and fabrication cost of PV devices; however, either their efficiency is lower (organic) or their lifetime is shorter (hybrid) than conventional silicon technology. Dr. Kelly¿s research aims to develop high efficiency, long lived, organic and hybrid solar cells through a combination of organic and inorganic synthesis, device engineering, and photophysics. The development of these next-generation PV technologies is crucial to reducing our carbon footprint and meeting emissions reduction targets.
