This research aims to understand how plants integrate signals from their surroundings to control growth patterns and developmental transitions that optimize performance. Research will focus on (1) the assembly and self-organization of dynamic cellular components that dictate tissue and growth patterns, (2) hormone-mediated feedback systems that balance cell proliferation and differentiation, and (3) identifying how plants gauge and modify their cell wall composition to maintain unidirectional expansion. These three mechanisms underscore the evolutionary processes that have enabled plants to colonize land and thrive in harsh environments. The program will therefore lead to new strategies for enhancing plant performance and productivity under challenging climatic conditions.
