Marine dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM, POM) are two of the ocean¿s most influential carbon and nitrogen reservoirs. Both play an important role in regulating Earth¿s climate. Previous work suggests size and composition are important in determining DOM and POM biological availability and cycling. Dr. Walker will use advanced size-fractionation, isotopic measurements and molecular-level approaches to better characterize DOM and POM. He will utilize new applied accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) techniques to advance our understanding of chemical oceanography and reveal new processes controlling DOM and POM biogeochemical cycling, and their deep ocean storage, on modern to millennial timescales.
