Water, minerals, shells and organic matter acquire climatic, ecological and environmental signatures that are recorded in the ratios of varieties ¿ stable isotopes ¿ of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen. Back to the Future-II¿ will use these signatures in lake sediments to determine and explain climatic and environmental change in southern Ontario over the last 15,000 years and anticipate future trends. This work will be grounded in a new, atmospheric-based model for precipitation isotopic variations in the Great Lakes region. Clay-water interaction effects on isotopic tracing of water movement in hazardous-waste rock repositories will also be determined to improve safety.
