The long-term, sustainable management of solid wastes is a major challenge in the mining industry and a priority for government regulation. The proposed research program focuses on integrating processes to repurpose mine tailings into regular mining operations in order to reduce environmental impacts. Repurposing mine wastes represents a promising approach to mitigate environmental impacts while also maximizing resource utilization and value generation from wastes. Findings are expected to improve the designs and efficiencies of processes to remove metal(loid)s of interest from mine wastes, thereby reducing the risks of environmental contamination and promoting the social acceptability of existing and developing projects.
