Optimization and evaluation of an optical device for mining applications

The mineral resource sector is important for Canada and Canadian companies are major stakeholders in global mining activities. The sustained high global gold prices and the strong role played by Canadian mining companies provided the rationale for the focus on gold mining applications. One of key issues for prospecting are the costs and timelines for samples analysis in the field. Samples are shipped at great cost to central labs, and it takes weeks or even months before the data get back to the prospecting camp. Samples collected in the field are commonly shipped to specialized laboratories for analysis. In addition to substantial logistic efforts and transportation costs, data are not received at the exploration site for many weeks. These data are important for documentation but do not support the ongoing activities on site and often can only be used in the next field season. The current application provides an onsite detection solution that could be important to support gold mining efforts across Canada.
