The goal of the partnership is to develop a set of genomic tools to enhance BC's new sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) aquaculture industry. Specifically, we will i) produce a 200-locus SNP chip to substantially expand the parentage analysis project launched in 2019 (see Background section), ii) produce a PCR-based tool for high-throughput sablefish sex-determination, and iii) use whole genome sequencing to identify genetic markers (SNP loci) that collectively predict growth rate and morphology. These resources will allow us to better-utilize the current brood stock population and to recruit superior brood stock from the captive population in order to improve survival, growth rate, and health, and ultimately develop a superior domestic lineage. This research is a collaboration between researchers at UVic, Golden Eagle Sablefish (GES), and the KA:'YU:'K'T'H' and CHE:K:TLES7ET'H' First Nations.
