Grain refinement is used to increase the performance of aluminum alloys, but there is a lack of compatibility between high silicon foundry alloys and current grain refiner based on titanium diboride. The development of a new grain refiner based on niobium boride can help improve foundry alloys. The performance increase should allow weight reduction in car casting components which is beneficial to the fuel economy and electric vehicle autonomy.
