项目摘要

This grant will support the primary objectives of the Center for Applied Research, Technology and innovation (CARTI) at North island College (NIC) - to provide exceptional opportunities for student learning while supporting the innovation needs of our communities. This NSERC Mobilize grant will enable CARTI to continue to pursue short applied research projects in our current specialty areas and further expand into new areas including coastal forestry, housing innovation, and alternative energy solutions with new partners. These increased opportunities allow for additional student involvement and applicable student training for the development of highly qualified personnel in these projects each year. The hiring of a business development officer (BDO), a part-time budget officer, and a part-time research technician will help CARTI better reach out into our community to develop projects. The BDO and budget officer positions will increase capacity to develop and manage new research projects, while the research technician will help to coordinate field work, maintain and oversee NIC's research facilities and equipment, and assist in student training. As outreach into our community is a major strategic goal for NIC, this grant will aid in sharing the knowledge gained from our applied research with our partners, communities, regional and sector-based networks, and other colleges.These activities will enable NIC to offer exceptional training to more students and provide innovation advances to support local businesses and organizations who contribute to socioeconomic development of the region and Canada.
