This proposal addresses a very critical environmental problem, animal manure management, with a special emphasis on cattle manure. Cattle manure is more than 50% lignocellulose, that is not only difficult to biodegrade anaerobically but also generates inhibitory intermediates. This project will optimize various pretreatment technologies using long-term testing as opposed to the unreprenstative short time methods previously used, as well as evaluate two new emerging municipal wastewater biosolids treatment technologies. The project will explore both the treatment of raw cattle manure as well as anaerobically digested cattle manure fibers. The ultimate objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive design model that can be used for techno-economic evaluation for various farm size applications. The three industrial partners in this project, comprise two well established technology providers in Canada and the US, as well as the leading consultant in biosolids treatment in North America. The industrial partners are key to the commercialization of the solutions to be developed in this project
