Regional Municipal Organic Waste Diversion to Anaerobic Digestion to Support Resource Recovery and Circular Economy

The Greenhouse Sector has a significant and expanding role to play in the Canadian economy. In a linear economy model, a large fraction of food and organic waste (FOW) from small- and medium-sized municipalities and industrial, commercial and institutional (IC&I) sector is ending up in landfills, which has several significant impacts on the environment, and society. Strategies that will support the circular economy model for FOW are starting to be promoted in Canada, and anaerobic digestion (AD) is a great option. However, there remain several hurdles that adversely impact small- and medium-sized municipalities, and also the IC&I sector, in their attempts to improve their targets for FOW diversion via AD. The goal of the project's partnership is to explore a novel regional public/private partnership framework for a holistic reduction in the cost of FOW diversion, in particular for small- and medium-sized municipalities and the vegetable greenhouse sector, to improve the feasibility of resource recovery using AD and support the circular economy model.
