Developers extensively search for code examples on software information sites and open-source software repositories to reuse existing solutions to solve problems instead of working from the scratch. This saves both development time and effort. However, the problem is that many of those code examples are not reliable. Those code examples lack important details (e.g., missing configurations, library dependencies, and code lines) that prevent their reuse. Online code examples can also contain errors or suffer from security vulnerabilities. The proposed research program aims to address the above-mentioned issues using a combination of empirical studies and the development of techniques to ease their use. A total of six graduate students and five undergraduate students will be trained with this grant over the next five years. The research findings will be disseminated in leading refereed journals and conferences, and will be presented at premier software engineering conferences.
