Techaero, a First Nation led Canadian-based SME is developing technology to use methane clathrates as analternative fuel source for Canadian northern communities who rely heavily on diesel. The main objective ofthe proposed research conducted by the University of Waterloo is to assist Techaero in designing anddeveloping a commercial scale operation which includes production, transportation/storage and regasificationof natural gas hydrates (clathrate). The objective to be achieved by comprehensive research aiming to developthe best (technical, economic, environmental and social) option considering Canadian specifics and needs. Thekey activities needed and planned to achieve the anticipated results include: comprehensive analysis ofavailable worldwide practices in producing fuel from clathrates; identifying existent knowledge gaps andpractical challenges; creating new fundamental knowledge and developing innovative technologicalapproaches to overcome existent challenges.
