英文摘要
Biosensing devices designed for fast, real-time identification of biomarkers are nowadays essential for many healthcare, medical and pharmaceutical applications. In addition, modern applications in these fields constantly demand for the next generation of biosensors to be miniaturized, automated, and multiplexed (i.e, capable to quantify several species of interest at the same time). Indeed, the development of next-generation biosensing devices capable of tackling such demands poses an important multidisciplinary challenge waiting to be addressed. An important health problem that demands such a next-generation biosensing device is that which originates from heart failure (HF) conditions, a global public health problem affecting millions of people across the world. This project aims at developing a proof-of-principle demonstration of a multiplexed nanoplasmonic biosensing platform for HF biomarker detection. Plasmonic biosensors, a class of optical biosensing devices, feature characteristics such as a fast real-time response, high sensitivity, and chip-scale integration. We will investigate a sensing architecture which is capable of multiplexing several tens of channels in order to carry out automated and accurate immunoassay measurements that hold the potential to outperform conventional clinical-based techniques (e.g. ELISA) used in the detection of HF biomarkers. The requested Catalyst grant will enable a synergetic interdisciplinary research collaboration to be initiated between the groups of Prof. Berini (uOttawa) and Prof. De Leon (Tec de Monterrey). The researchers' combined expertise will enable a new research avenue offering solutions that involve advanced biosensing technologies applied to important needs in medical diagnosis and medical research, such as the detection of biomarkers related to HF.
