As 5G networks are being deployed, researchers are now turning their attention to the next generation of wireless communication networks. The first phase of post-5G wireless will be data-intensive wireless broadband services, which require a massive increase in data rate compared to 5G. Just as the mmWave-band was an enabler of the data rates required by 5G, the terahertz band needs to be used to enable the Tb/s data rates that will be required for many 6G services. This proposal focuses on enabling technologies for future wireless communication systems. We consider techniques that increase the spectral efficiency (which is measured by the data rate in bits/sec per unit bandwidth used), improve bit error rate performances, reduce computational complexity to allow certain technologies to be feasibly implemented and to improve the security of wireless communications. To do this we propose novel permutation-based index modulation schemes. Another method to increase spectral efficiency is the use of partial response signaling (PRS). Sequence detection in PRS can be computationally complex; therefore, to maintain reasonable complexity we propose the use of our novel sequence estimation algorithms based on Gaussian separability. For ultra-massive MIMO operating in the terahertz band, we consider reduced complexity precoding and combining that combines analog beamforming on subarrays of antennas and digital weighting of the subarrays. Finally, we consider the implementation of staircase codes in high speed wireless communications and propose the use of erasure decoding of these codes to improve their performance (or even reduce complexity as the improved performance can be traded off against reduced number of decoder iterations). We then adapt our erasure decoding algorithm for staircase codes to convert staircase coding into a secure encryption technique. We will determine the cryptographic strength of our proposed scheme and compare with other encryption techniques in the literature.
