Multi-dimensional Resilience Framework Development for Culvert Infrastructure Systems

In the Canadian Infrastructure report card 2019, it is demonstrated that the state of our infrastructure is at risk, which should be cause for concern for all Canadians and Canada's public infrastructure will require significant attention in the coming decades. Culverts comprise a crucial segment of highway assets that require routine inspections, maintenance, and timely repair and renewal. However, unprecedented natural hazards like earthquake, floods, landslides, and wide geospatial distribution of these assets accompanied by strict budget restrictions pose substantial challenges for the transportation agencies. Therefore, the vulnerability and resilience assessment of culverts against natural hazards is essential to achieve a sustainable and resilient transportation network. The long-term objective of this research is to assess the vulnerability and resilience of culverts against flood hazards for upgrading the culvert management practices. The outcome of this research is poised to significantly improve our understanding and management of culvert infrastructure from natural disasters or unwanted disruptions. This collaborative program will produce new insights prompting the improvement of culvert and transportation resilience analysis with optimal resource allocation.
