The mHealth and eHealth Development and Innovation Centre (MEDIC) Technology Access Centre (TAC) has generated more than $9M in private and other revenue, and completed 1,100+ projects, services, and training contracts for small- and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs), provincial health organizations, and non-government organizations (NGOs). For its second term, MEDIC will use its expertise in digital health standards and software development to respond to the increased market demand for virtual care that has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A May 2020 survey found 74% of Canadians are considering virtual healthcare, and already, 50% of physician visits can be done virtually. The increased demand for virtual care and the need to build interoperability across new and existing software solutions to meet this demand represents a significant market opportunity for MEDIC during its next term. To further expand its capacity to serve clients, MEDIC will integrate deeply with Mohawk Colleges Medical Technologies Innovation Centre (MTIC), including its Centre for Healthcare Simulation. Located at the School of Health, MTICs expertise in investigating the impact of technology on patient outcomes, performing clinical practices, training and certifying medical technicians, will complement MEDICs services offerings. There are more than 1,300 digital health companies in Ontario who employ more than 26,000 people and earn nearly $13 billion in annual revenue, with exports totaling $1.45 B. Digital health spending as a portion of global health care spending is forecasted to increase from 3 to 8% by 2030. MEDIC will continue to support the sector growth.
