The proposed project is a new collaborative venture between the applicant's lab at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Reva Solutions ("Reva") in Surrey, British Columbia. Reva is an IT company that develops content management solutions - processes and technologies that support the collection, managing and publishing of information - for mobile and cloud applications. In April 2015, the company relocated its headquarters from downtown Vancouver to the new Health Tech Innovation Hub at Surrey's Innovation Boulevard to facilitate the expansion of its content management technologies to healthcare Internet of Things (IoT).
In order to aid hospitals and senior care facilities in managing the health of seniors, many new sensors are being developed, such as fall or incontinence moisture sensors, with the aim of increasing operational efficiencies, reducing healthcare costs and improving the health of older adults by reducing risk factors that can result in health related problems. These portable and wearable sensor devices allow for the continuous monitoring of an individual in order to predict early diagnosis of a chronic condition that may lead to an acute event such as a fall. The outputs from these various sensors need to be collected and monitored and interpreted, which is the focus of this Engage project. Specifically, the development of a Raspberry Pi-based platform will be used as a prototype to pursue a healthcare IoT that will provide a data collection hub to manage sensor inputs from existing wearable fall sensors and proposed urinary incontinence sensors embedded in diapers.
