Smart Sensors for Soft Robotics

The goal of the new partnership to be established with the University of Sheffield and the University of York under an Alliance International Catalyst grant is to combine advanced sensor technology (U. of Sherbrooke, U. of Sheffield) with new models and methods of computation (U. of York) to develop concepts for next-generation soft robotics. More efficient design and control methodologies for soft robots could conceivably have important outcomes and impacts in the rapidly growing fields of collaborative robotics and exoskeletons, for instance. The most important new concept to be explored in the new partnership is the development of soft robots using a new generation of smart sensors with built-in machine learning capabilities in combination with flexible robot bodies that are designed to have intrinsic non-linear information-processing capabilities.
