The number of Ontarioans aged 65 years or older is expected to double by 2035, contributing to healthcare costs consuming 70% of the provincial budget by 2024. Digitizing healthcare delivery through the application of health technologies is recognized as a key strategy to improving patient outcomes while addressing rising costs. Since 2011, NSERC Build-IE funding for the Technology Solutions for Healthcare Management and Health Research and Promotion research program has enabled Centennial College to successfully support Ontario's health technology sector's small- and medium-sized enterprises overcome applied research, technology development and commercialization challenges in the areas of software programming, simulation and gaming applications for patient education, and self-management of chronic conditions. To date, the Centennial team has completed over 130 projects with 90+ industry partners creating 138 novel health technology technologies, of which over 120 have been successfully commercialized. The continued growth of Ontario's health technology sector, and companies' increasing demand for expanded applied research and technology development support in areas such as machine learning, data analytics, natural language processing, image processing, signal processing, robotics, mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, means that Centennial College now seeks NSERC Extend-IE funding to renew its Technology Solutions for Healthcare Management and Health Research and Promotion research program . NSERC Extend-IE investment will enable the College to help companies overcome significant scientific and technical challenges related to health technology design, development and commercialization and increase their ability to develop products that can compete in the global healthcare market.
