This project establishes a new partnership between Innofibre and Resolute Forest Products inc. (RFP) for the purpose of developing new food packaging made from Thermo-Mechanical Pulps (TMP) using Innofibre's pilot pulp thermoforming machine.The work that will be carried-out to meet the project's objectives is composed of laboratory/pilot pulp thermoforming trials and trial samples testing.RFP initiated this project given the business opportunity related to the increased market demand of biodegradable food packaging to replace single-use plastic packaging. As a global pulp manufacturer, this project aligns with its strategic plan.This project will have a positive impact on the training of Cégep de Trois-Rivières students. It will increase their expertise in the field of pulp thermoforming and products development. Thus, these students will be a potential human resource for companies seeking to diversify their activities and their range of products. Canadian forest products industry has always played a major economic role, but the evolution of the global market has weakened its competitiveness and led to newsprint plant closures, poor financial results and numerous job losses. When the industry is looking for new business practices and engages in new industrial avenues, it requires rethinking, reorganization and modernization. The proposed activities will create new, value-added products markets in an extremely competitive landscape, and will help restore declining demand for products arising from pulp manufacturing such as TMP.
