The UBC School of Engineering Sustainable Transport Safety Research Lab (STS) propose to develop Canada's first Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) hydrail locomotive. Hydrail employs an on-board, low-pressure hydrogen storage/delivery system integrated with a hydrogen fuel cell (HFC)/battery hybrid power system. It will replace traditional diesel-electric internal combustion engines (ICEs), and transform Canada into a globally dominant hydrogen-based technology and energy provider and user in pursuit of its Investing in Canada Plan, Transport 2030 and Net Zero 2050 goals. The global hydrogen storage market is expected to reach US 1.13 B by 2026 with a CAGR of 8.3%, which is roughly 8% of the total market. Several innovative outcomes of the research proposed in this Alliance grant application include:1. Low-pressure, on-board H2 storage and delivery system that extends operating locomotive range,2. Computer-assisted power control module that mimics responsiveness of traditional locomotive units,3. System integration that allows hydrail units to seamlessly emulate & pair with diesel-electric units. The on-board, low-pressure hydrogen storage/delivery system is being researched in partnership with Hydrogen in Motion Inc. (H2M). H2M is a Vancouver based organization unique in its development of low-pressure hydrogen storage technology based on nanomaterials (adsorbent based). It makes H2M technology extremely light, portable, & shapeable to meet application needs, a major advantage over traditional high-pressure storage. H2M will be a disruptor as the key to solving financial and technical barriers to hydrogen transformation. This will make H2M's storage technology popular not only in ZEV hydrail locomotives, but in other hydrogen technology sectors, thus expanding their market reach. SRY is our other partner in this research, also based in Vancouver, and have been motivated to retrofit their fleet of 31 older locomotives to reduce GHGs and emission fees. This research partnership is proposed to take 5 years, with results shared widely through our existing research, industry, and regulatory networks.
