This research program focuses on strongly interacting systems appearing in laboratories on earth and in astrophysical settings. Specifically, I theoretically investigate neutron stars (compact astrophysical objects), nuclei (especially the isotopes created in state-of-the-art experimental facilities), and cold atoms (the coldest systems on earth). My studies range from pen-and-paper intuitive approaches to large-scale calculations on modern supercomputers. Specific problems tackled include: a) the attempt to connect the interactions between neutrons and protons to the underlying level (of quarks and gluons), b) exotic states that emerge when many particles come together, e.g., superfluidity, the absence of viscous flow, c) the cross-pollination between different areas of physics, i.e., the use of ultracold atomic gases or other systems to provide experimental constraints on the properties of neutrons and protons. Graduate and undergraduate students (including summer students) play a major role in these studies.
